Chapter 38
"I'm fine... no need," Karen gathered as much politeness as she could, hoping the pigman would let his guard down and leave her alone. Needless to say, her plan didn't work out the way she wanted to.
"It's no bother. Come.â He reached out to snatch her arm with his thick fingers, and Karen's nerves gave up at that moment. She twirled around and ran in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, she could hear his thumping footsteps coming after her. She panicked when she realized she was in unfamiliar enemy territory and had no means to protect herself. The only thing she could trust was that her legs would carry her quickly enough so she could lose her pursuer.
Why do I always get into such situations? Ever since I arrived here, Iâ
"Ooof," Karen hit a wall with a soft cover. Her nose tingled at the impact, but otherwise, she was fine. She felt two hands on her arms and realized she had run into a person. Afraid who was it, she looked up to see familiar gray eyes. Her eyes teared up at the relief she felt at that moment.

"Taiki!" she said, and the panic on her face transformed into hope.
What happened? He didn't have to wonder long as a hanyÅ more pig than man turned the corner with great momentum. He stopped at the sight of the ninja glaring at him.
"Shinobi," he sneered. Taiki brushed away the hostility directed at him. He was used to it by now. The hanyÅ was still walking closer. "Thanks for catching that sweetcorn." Half-pig reached out for Karen, who trembled in Taiki's arms. He wouldn't have handed her over anyway.
"Stay back," Taiki said confidently.
The hanyÅ's hand stopped mid-air.
"What?"
"I said stay back."
"I just want to help her."
"No need. I'm here," Taiki said.
"Oh?" Pigman asked in a mocking tone. "I found that sweetcorn first. I get to take her."
Taiki saw red for a moment, and it took tremendous effort not to instinctively lash out at the pig. One of his hands slid down from Karen's shoulder and slipped it into his pocket. He was looking for a small smoke bomb. Hopefully, his hand would find one filled with a pungent smell. He came across several small orbs in his pocket, but he had no way of confirming which was which lest pigman's attention was drawn to it.
Unexpected attacks were the most effective kinds.
"She is under my protection," Taiki replied and vaguely registered Karen looking up at him in wonder. He squeezed her shoulder, and finally chose his weapons from his pocket. "Now, scram."
"How dare you, puny humanâGAH!"
Taiki didn't waste more time on the conversation and threw several small orbs at the hanyÅ. Upon contact, all of them burst, and colorful smoke filled the corridor.
"Don't breathe," he warned Karen, who looked at him as if he went insane.
"What do you mean don'tâbleh." Karen started to cough and hack. "Disgusting!"
Taiki sighed under his mask. Why does she never listen to me? He fished out a spare mask and put it over her nose and mouth.
